Recently, Suchir Balaji, a talented AI researcher, passed away at his residence, leaving behind his parents. During his time at Open AI, he was a Member of the Technical Staff.
On November 26, 2024, Suchir Balaji was found lifeless in his San Franciso apartment. Similarly, it was later revealed that he took his own life. When his parents found out that Suchir Balaji had passed away, the news devastated them as it circulated online.
Suchir seems to be the only son of Balaji Ramamurthy and Poornima Rao. Additionally, Anthony Mooz, an angel investor in AI companies, gave some insights into Suchir’s father.

On X, formerly known as Twitter, Anothony wrote, “I just spoke to Suchir’s father, Balaji Ramamurthy. His father is a very good friend of mine. He’s in absolute shock upon hearing the loss of his son.”
Besides this, there is not much information about his parents. Maybe people are giving them privacy as they have just lost their son.
Moreover, the family was looking for a strong law firm or attorney to help with the case. As an integral part of ChatGPT, his parents seek the answers, as they have described him as a happy person.
Additionally, Anothony stated that Suchir had his schedule packed with major press starting December 1, so his demise came as a surprise. Regardless, his family is trying to gather evidence in the case.

Suchir was originally from Cupertino, California, but later moved to San Francisco. While in California, he attended the University of California, Berkeley. Similarly, he pursued a degree in Computer Science.
Additionally, Suchir was excellent in academics. He completed his degree with a GPA of 3.98. Also, during his teenage years, he became the US Computing Olympiad Open National Champion in 2016.

Then, in November 2020, he began working for Open AI. There, he played a big role in training ChatGPT. However, over time, he became concerned about AI training methods’ ethical implications.
He was particularly concerned about the use of copyrighted materials without proper authorization. In August 2024, Suchir suddenly decided to resign from his post. He had also worked for Open AI for nearly four years.
Upon resigning, he became vocal about his concerns over AI. Moreover, he questioned Open AI’s reliance on fair use defenses. Furthermore, he argued that generative AI products could create substitutes that compete with the original data on which they were trained.
What’s more, in October 2024, he showed his concerns in an interview with The New York Times. In the interview, he shared that technology would likely cause “more harm than good to society.”
Sadly, the next news people heard of him was his passing. Afterward, popular CEOs, including Elon Musk, expressed their condolences. In addition, Musk also reflected on his warnings about the darker side of AI.
