On Tuesday, October 29, 2024, Hollywood lost yet another gem as actress Teri Garr passed away from multiple sclerosis.
Following her demise, many Hollywood A-listers sent prayers to the grieving family including David Letterman who called Teri Garr as one of his all-time favorite guests.
The TV host also shared one of his favorite moments with her on his talk show Late Show with David Letterman on the Instagram. Even in the video, the duo shared an undeniable chemistry full of playful, flirtatious banter that everyone loved.
Though audience sort of ‘shipped’ them and saw them as a perfect match for marriage, David Letterman and Teri Garr remained good friends over the years.
That said, Teri Garr once said, “I refused David Letterman’s proposal of marriage for obvious reasons, but thanks for asking.” Now, you may wonder when did David propose to her, when did this happen.
But, it seems that in one of her 39 appeareance in Late Show with David Letterman, he talked about his affection to her and jokingly revealed he’d marry her “in a second if she’d have me,” which Teri Garr declined with her classic line about ‘obvious reasons.’
After Teri Garr got married to her husband John O’Neil, she told David Letterman in his show that, “I got married and I didn’t marry you. As much as I planned on it at one certain point.”
To which, David replies, “That would have been a hell of a thing,” but Teri Garr later pointed out it wouldn’t have worked out for 10 to 20 minutes. So, yeah it seems like maybe David Letterman and Teri Garr might have even considered marriage, maybe!
Marriage of Teri Garr with John O’Neil did not work out and pair parted ways later!
On November 11, 1993, Tootsie actress Teri Garr married John O’Neil, a building contractor, in Mexico. On the very same day of marriage, they adopted their only child, Molly O’Neil.
In the talk show of David Letterman, she stated that she knew John for a couple of years prior to their marriage.
She also said, “I don’t think he really wanted to get married cuz we kept trying to get married different places. It’s just something would happen there’d be some snag.“

However, three years later, their marriage fell apart as they divorced in 1996, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for their split.
After that, late actress Teri Garr did not marry anyone and led a lowkey lifestyle. So there are no other names that got romantically linked-up with her over the years.
But prior to her marriage, Teri Garr was in a relationship with Roger Birnbaum, followed by David Kipper, each lasting seven years. Furthermore, there were rumors of her dating Gene Wilder, François Truffaut and David Letterman.
