Aboriginal advocate Lidia Thorpe hasn’t remarried following an unstable relationship with her ex-husband!
Lidia Thorpe hasn’t been lucky in terms of relationships, as she had a turbulent bond with her ex-husband. Her public dating life has also been shrouded in scandals and cheating allegations, making it challenging to find the perfect partner.
Before joining the political scene, she studied at Fitzroy High for Year 9 but left soon afterward at the age of 14. The unfortunate events brought her to her ex-husband, whose name remains undisclosed, and Lidia Thorpe became a single mother as a teenager.
In 2013, Thorpe had to undergo an investigation for bankruptcy with over $700,000 in debts owned to Indigenous Business Australia and $55,000 owned to the Australian Taxation Office. The politician revealed that her situation resulted in an escape from domestic violence.
Thorpe stated, “I ended up losing everything in a bid to protect myself and my family from an impossible situation.” The authorities revealed that her ex-husband’s alcoholism caused their poor financial condition, and the politician emerged from bankruptcy in 2016.
Moreover, in the following years, Thorpe focused on a political career and joined the Victorian Greens party to fill the Senate vacancy. However, during her appointment, the politician was in a relationship with Dean Martin, the ex-president of the Rebels outlaw biker gang.
Such connections led to speculation that Thorpe had been using her position to deliver confidential information to motorcycle gangs and organized crime. One of the party members revealed her relationship, creating internal conflict.
Following an elaborate investigation, information emerged that Thorpe used encrypted messages with Martin and often deleted their weekly online conversation. The controversy led to her release from the Greens party.

While Thorpe struggled with her departure from the party and wanted to establish herself as an independent parliament member, another one of her former partners came forward about her dating controversy.
Further, the politician had been together with Gavan McFadzean, who was devastated to learn about her affair through social media. The pair had been together since 2019 and separated after Thorpe’s connection with Martin.
Additionally, McFadzean manages the Climate Change and Clean Energy Program at the Australian Conservation Foundation. With over 25 years of experience in the industry, he has worked closely with the Greens party, including as the party leader’s director of campaigns and communications.
After the discovery, McFadzean posted on Facebook alongside a crying face emoji saying, “When you find out via national media your partner was having an affair.“
The post garnered millions of likes, forcing Thorpe to address the issue. She claimed she met Martin through a Black Activism group and was with him in early 2021.
In a public statement, Thorpe added, “We remain friends and have collaborated on our shared interests advocating for the rights of First Nations peoples.“
Despite her clarification, many flocked to support McFadzean during the difficult time and mentioned that he deserved someone better than Thorpe.
So, with such a history of relationships, Thorpe has avoided the idea of marriage. Regardless, she is the proud mother of three children: a son and two daughters who have blessed her with four grandchildren.
