The Equatorial Guinea authorities have charged the Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency, Baltasar Engonga, after graphic tapes showcasing his relationship with the sister and wife of high-profile politicians, including the President, were discovered.
Initially, Baltasar Engonga was under investigation for fraud. Still, a deep look into his private life revealed his sinister behavior, raising concerns about professional conduct and public health risks.
Authorities discovered over 400 videos stored on Engonga’s computer, showcasing his sensual relationship with close relatives of the country’s high-end personalities. The tapes included clips of his brother’s wife, his cousin, the sister of the President of Equatorial Guinea, the Director General of Police’s wife, and about 20 of the country’s minister’s wife.

Apart from the political figures, Engonga had several relationships with women nationwide while using office space for such activities. The police have charged him with adultery and estimate that his sentence might increase.
Moreover, the clips included the country’s flag while Engonga engaged with the women, and most of the incidents date back to October. The investigation into his activities is ongoing, while speculations have arisen online.
As the videos gain attention worldwide, users have used Artificial Intelligence (AI) to create fake videos of Engonga involved with other people. For legal reasons, authorities have protected the original videos, but new clips have emerged since his detention.
On the other hand, news surfaced that one of the women involved with the convict had taken matters into her own hands and committed her life. The video showcases her family members mourning; however, official reports haven’t confirmed the woman’s demise.

With the open investigation, people speculated that the President of Equatorial Guinea released the footage of Baltasar Engonga as an act of revenge for involving his sister in the scandal.
Further, Engonga comes from a family of influential politicians, as his father, Baltasar Engonga Edjo’o, is the head of the Central African Economic and Monetary Community. Due to his connections in the industry, Engonga landed the position of overseeing corruption in the country.
However, the politician misused his position to gain financial and personal benefits. Engonga came under the authorities’ radar for making suspicious transactions from public accounts in Equatorial Guinea to private accounts in the Cayman Islands.

Due to his recent scandal, the government of Equatorial Guinea has suspended all officials who engaged in explicit activities within ministry offices. The government has mentioned its zero-tolerance policy against such behaviors.
In a recent public statement, vice President Teodoro Nguema added, “Given the abuse that has been shown on social media in Equatorial Guinea in recent days, anyone who violates this rule again will be subject to punishment.“
Similarly, he stated the government’s plans to install surveillance cameras in all state body offices to avoid such incidents in the future. The company will employ the cameras 24/7 to ensure proper office conduct.
Due to the nature of the situation, people transmitted the clips and images through social platforms, including Twitter, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The country took swift action against the activity and restricted people from downloading the files on WhatsApp.
Authorities confirmed that both parties consented to the clips, and Engonga will face charges only for misuse of the country’s funds. An anonymous source released the tapes, and the government has limited communication in recent days.
